The messy bun isn't just the perfect solution for a bad hair day—it's also a hairstyle that always looks great. The trick is simply knowing how to tie it the right way. It looks so simple—and it really is! We've put together a 4-step guide to help you create the perfect "messy bun."

Step 1: Add texture

Long hair can be too smooth for a “messy bun.” That’s a total nightmare when trying to create this look. It’s important to add some texture to your hair. You can do this by using a volumizing spray at the roots and throughout the strands. Try the Waterclouds Volume Ocean Mist, for example. Work it in well, andvoilà—you’ve got texture in your hair againFor some extra volume, in addition to using the volumizing spray, you can also backcomb your hair at the roots. Using a backcombing comb, backcomb about 5 cm from the roots. Gently run the comb over the top section of your hair so that the backcombed part is hidden, but you still have the volume.

Step 2: Remove Knots

Run your fingers through your hair to remove any large knots. Avoid using a comb or brush, as these will make your hair too smooth and take away from the “messy” look. You want to maintain a tousled look.

Step 3: Create a "messy bun"

Gather your hair at the top of your head into a ponytail. Hold the ponytail in your hand and pull half of your hair through the hair tie. Next, fold the hair tie in half and wrap the remaining hair around it; this will form a bun. If possible, wrap the hair tie around it one more time.

Step 4: Make it “messy”

Gently pull the "messy bun" apart to create a fuller bun. Next, place your fingertips on your scalp and pull your hair forward slightly. Finally, you can pull out a few strands of hair at the nape of your neck and around your face. This creates an extra "messy" effect.
