Curly Girl Method

Women with naturally curly hair know that curly hair requires special care. Curly hair can even look different from one day to the next! When the weather is very dry, it can become much tighter, or if you decide to sleep with wet hair, for some people it falls into perfect shape, while for others it looks like the curls have exploded. Fortunately, caring for curls gets a little easier with the Curly Hair Method! The Curly Hair Method is based on a well-known book: *Curly Girl: The Handbook*. The Curly Girl Method, also known as the CG Method, is a real hit. The author, Lorraine Massay, is the owner of the Devachang salons and product line. Drawing on years of experience, she’s written a book for all types of curls, including, for example, how to care for African American or wavy hair. She’s also broken her method down into several steps: washing, conditioning, and styling.

Step 1: Final Wash

The first step of the Curly Hair Method is the so-called Final Wash. This step is necessary to remove all product residue and silicones that have built up. For this, you’ll need a shampoo that’s silicone-free and contains strong sulfates . The sulfates in the Final Wash shampoo remove all harmful residue from your hair and scalp left behind by previous (inappropriate) products that have built up over time. This allows you to start fresh with the right hair products for your curly hair! The Final Wash step is for one-time use, but if you swim regularly in the ocean or a pool, you can repeat this step once a month.

We have a number of shampoos that deeply cleanse the hair, removing all product residue. This gives your hair and scalp a fresh start so you can begin the Curly Hair Method!

Step 2: Curly Girl Method Shampoo

After the first step of the Curly Hair Method, you start washing your curls with shampoo. But according to the Curly Girl Method, you’ll need a special CG shampoo for that. And CG shampoo isn’t just any shampoo. “Regular shampoo” generally contains sulfates, and according to Lorraine Massay, these sulfates are too harsh for curly hair. Sulfates are known to dry out the scalp by stripping away its natural oils. And as most women with curls know, curly hair is naturally drier than other hair types! Would you rather use a dry shampoo instead of a regular shampoo? Or a combination of the two? If so, we’ve selected a dry shampoo for you that leaves no residue and absorbs excess sebum.

The products we've selected for the Curly Girl Method are completely sulfate-free! We carry CG shampoos from various brands, such as BioSilk, Waterclouds, and Kérastase.

Step 3: Curly Girl Method Conditioner

After washing your hair with the CG shampoo, use a conditioner to moisturize it. The first few times you use the conditioner, you’ll probably need more because your hair is damaged or because you’re just starting out with the Curly Hair Method. Once your hair is better moisturized, you can use less. So figure out what the best amount of CG conditioner is for your hair. The Curly Hair Method recommends leaving some of the conditioner in your hair. Curly hair needs that extra hydration and won’t get greasy easily. Your hair will absorb what it needs, and you’ll squeeze out the excess while drying it. This method of hair care won’t work for everyone, so see if it works for you! Of course, you can also use a leave-in conditioner to ensure your hair gets enough nourishment.

All CG conditioners are silicone-free, since they’re typically used to remove silicone from the hair. Since you’re now using a sulfate-free CG shampoo, this is no longer necessary. We carry a variety of conditioners from Bumble and bumble, Biosilk, and Waterclouds. We also carry shampoos and conditioners from the same brands so you can use products that work well together. We’ve also taken colored hair into account; for example, we have a shampoo and conditioner from Waterclouds that neutralizes yellow tones in the hair.

Step 4: Curly Girl Method Treatment

When writing *The Curly Girl Method*, Lorraine Massay naturally took into account the dry texture of women with curly hair. That’s why we offer the Curly Girl Method Treatment. These treatments are specifically designed for women with curly hair who struggle with dry or extremely dry hair. A hair serum or hair mask can provide your dry curls with that extra bit of nourishment they need so that damaged hair can repair itself.

We carry a variety of Curly Girl Method treatments from brands such as TIGI, Hairfinity, and Olaplex.

Step 5: Curly Girl Method Styling

The final step in our Curly Hair Method consists of a few optional steps. You decide for yourself which styling products you want to use. The Curly Girl Method styling products include a CG Method gel, oil, spray, serum, lotion, curl cream, and curl mousse.

The CG Method curl cream prevents hair from becoming frizzy or tangled. The curl cream helps you keep your hair under control. Many CG Method curl creams have a protective effect and add bounce. Another popular way to style your hair is with a curl mousse. Many women with curls prefer mousse because the different hold levels mean there’s always a good option for your hair. Plus, curl mousse creates full, beautiful curls. Another option is the CG Method gel. A gel is ideal for curly hair because it not only prevents frizz but also gives your hair a beautiful shine and better definition! There are countless different options for styling curly hair. Whether you want to use a combination of different products or just your favorite one, the options are endless!
