Uppercut is an Australian men’s hair care brand inspired by the timeless style of 1950s barbershops. The brand was founded when two childhood friends, Lucas Newman and Steve Purcell, discovered their love for barbering. At the time, Steve had already been working as a barber for 13 years. During a stay in Portland, Oregon, Lucas came to admire how barbering was a timeless profession. He decided then that he wanted to become a barber. He returned home and sought an internship, after which the two friends decided to start their own business. The shop was a reflection of the two of them—a place to just hang out. When they opened the shop, the barbering trade was at a real low point in Australia and was often misunderstood.

It was up to the friends to restore the profession’s masculine image. They were tired of using products that were actually intended for women. The brand was inspired by the grandfather of one of the friends, Willy (Uppercut) O’Shea. He was a traveling boxer during the Great Depression who, despite being very poor, always looked his best. He never went anywhere without his can of pomade. His motto was “a hard start makes for a good finish.” After much experimentation, they were finally satisfied and launched the first Uppercut product, the Deluxe Pomade.
