Uppercut is an Australian men's haircare brand inspired by the timeless style of barbershops in the 1950s. The brand was born when two childhood friends, Lucas Newman and Steve Purcell, discovered their love of barbering. Steve had already been working as a barber for 13 years. During a stay in Portland, Oregon, Lucas admired how barbering was a timeless profession. He then decided he wanted to become a barber. He returned and looked for an apprenticeship, after which the two friends decided to open their own shop. The shop reflected the two friends themselves, a place to simply hang out. When they opened the shop, the barbering profession was at a real low point in Australia and was often misunderstood.
It was up to the friends to make the profession masculine again. They were tired of using products that were actually intended for women. The brand is inspired by one of the friends' grandfathers, Willy (Uppercut) O’Shea. He was a touring boxer during the Great Depression who, despite being very poor, always looked good. He never went anywhere without his tin of pomade. His motto was “a hard beginning makes a good ending.” After a lot of experimentation, they were finally satisfied and launched the first Uppercut product, Deluxe Pomade. The brand aims to develop only the highest-quality products for the perfect look.
