Want your curls to always look on-point? Is that quite a challenge in practice? You probably know the feeling: you’ve just created beautiful curls or waves with your curling iron. Two hours later, you look in the mirror and feel disappointed! Your curls have vanished! It’s every woman’s hair nightmare, especially on special occasions when time is often not on our side. We’ve put together our top tips for curls, so you can show off your curly locks for longer!
Why do curls fall out?
Your hair’s texture and thickness have a major influence on how well your curls hold. Unfortunately, we can’t change this. Your hair texture and thickness are genetically determined, so we have Mom and Dad to thank for that :-). If you have heavy hair, your curls will fall out faster. But no worries, the tips below are helpful for heavy hair too!
The way you curl your hair also determines how long the curls will hold. If you style your hair incorrectly, there’s a good chance those beautiful curls will let you down in no time! One mistake we women often make is pulling our hair too tight while blow-drying. This leaves the hair overworked before you even start curling it.

So how can you make your curls last longer?
- Wash your hair well so it isn’t greasy when you curl it. Ideally, use a volumizing shampoo, so your hair gets an extra boost of volume. One of our favorite volumizing shampoos is Organicals Remedy Sebum Volumizing Shampoo. We also recommend not using conditioner if you’re going to curl your hair. Curls hold best in coarse hair. Also avoid hair oils and serums after washing, as they make your hair smooth too.
- Hairspray! Once your curls have cooled, use hairspray to help them hold longer. Spray the underside of your curls. Too much hairspray will make your curls fall out, so be careful how much you use!
- Make your hair coarse. You can do this by using a strengthening mousse. After applying the mousse to your hair, blow-dry it. Note: Only brush the bottom of your hair while blow-drying. You can blow-dry the top using your hands. If you don’t have mousse in your bathroom cabinet, you can also use dry shampoo to make your hair coarser. Now you’re ready to curl!
- Sleep with your hair in rollers and wake up with a beautiful head of curls. The longer you leave them in your hair, the longer your curls will last.
- When curling your hair with a curling iron, work with thin sections at a time. You probably usually let each section hang after curling it. Try pinning the sections in place after curling them. This gives the curls a chance to cool down and helps them last longer. Once you’ve finished curling, you can let them down one by one. To make sure they really hold, spray on a little (not too much!) hairspray underneath the curls.
- Curl your hair using a high heat setting. The high temperature helps curls hold better. But make sure you choose a temperature that suits your hair type. This varies from one hair type to another. For some people, setting the straightener to 150 degrees works perfectly, while others get the curls of their dreams at 200 degrees. - If you have to bike or walk to your party, tie your hair up. Wind is a major culprit!
