What is a hair toner?

If you color your hair regularly, you’re probably familiar with this: unwanted tones in your hair. When you’ve just had your hair colored, this is of course the last thing you want, so you’ll want to get rid of it quickly. A toner can help you do just that! A toner is a product containing colored pigments that neutralize the unwanted tones in dyed hair. This leaves only your desired hair color.

How does a hair toner work?

Hair toners work through a neutralization process that takes into account the color wheel of primary and secondary colors.
Colors that are directly opposite each other on the color wheel are called complementary colors. When you mix these colors, you’ll notice that a dark, neutral color is created. The vivid color is thus neutralized.

Hair toner is mainly used by hairstylists when the hair has been bleached beforehand. When hair is bleached, a bleaching agent is used to lighten it. Bleach removes the pigment that gives your hair its natural color, but unfortunately, it cannot remove all of the pigment. This can cause an orange or yellow tint to appear soon after bleaching. To counteract these unwanted tones, a toner is used. A toner then ensures that these unwanted tones are removed from the hair, as the unwanted tones and the added pigments in the toner cancel each other out.

Why use a hair toner?

Toners have become an indispensable part of any color treatment. A toner enhances the effect of a color treatment and ensures that unwanted tones are removed from the hair. In addition, a hair toner can be reapplied after a few weeks to refresh the hair color and protect it from fading.

You use a hair toner to achieve an even color result and bring out the best in your hair color. This way, blonde shades can be transformed into an ash-blonde, sandy-blonde, or even rosé-blonde look.

Which hair toner is right for my hair?

As described earlier, a toner is designed to neutralize unwanted tones in the hair. But how do you know which toner is right for your hair color? Below are a few examples of the most commonly used hair toners:

  • Do you notice an orange tint in your hair after coloring it? If so, use a blue hair toner. Blue pigments neutralize orange tones, eliminating that unwanted orange tint from your hair. We recommend the Fanola No Orange Hair Mask. This is an effective hair mask that neutralizes unwanted orange and copper tones thanks to the blue pigments it contains. Plus, this mask helps your color last longer and keeps your hair hydrated.
  • Do you have a yellow tint in your hair after dyeing it? If so, use a purple hair toner. The purple pigments neutralize the yellow tones, making them no longer visible. A great toner to use at home is the Fudge Clean Blonde Violet Shampoo. This powerful silver shampoo neutralizes the yellow tint in dyed hair without drying it out. Plus, this shampoo contains a blend of ingredients that promote healthy, vibrant, and shiny hair.
  • Do you have a green tint in your hair? Maybe from swimming in a pool? If so, use a red hair toner. Red neutralizes green, which helps remove these tones from your hair. Unfortunately, there are no shampoos that are effective at treating colored hair with an unwanted green tint. We do recommend using a clarifying shampoo after swimming to remove chlorine from your hair and prevent further damage to your hair color. For this, try M.M’s Deep Cleansing Shampoo, for example. This powerful shampoo cleanses deeply and offers protection against heat and UV rays.
