How do you keep Balayage looking good?
This is the big question when it comes to Balayage. After the treatment, the hair looks beautiful. But what matters is what happens in the days after . Gradually, the hair’s true condition becomes apparent as the effects of blow-drying/straightening wear off. And however beautiful Balayage may be, the fact remains that it doesn’t do your locks any favors. Hair dye and/or bleach are usually used. These are often chemical products that can dry out and damage your hair if you don’t care for it properly.
How often should you touch up Balayage?
The great thing about Balayage is that, compared to traditional hair coloring techniques, you don’t have to make a regular touch-up trip to the hairdresser. What’s more annoying than those roots saying hello there! every five weeks? Fortunately, the highlights (strokes) grow out gradually and naturally because they’re applied mostly to the lower part of the hair. So you can keep an eye on your hair color yourself and decide when it’s time to freshen it up. We recommend refreshing your hair color every 2 to 3 months! You can also let your Balayage grow out, resulting in an Ombre effect. Ombre hair is a coloring technique where the hair is lighter at the ends than at the roots. So you get this for free when you let your Balayage grow out ;-).
Caring for Balayage
We said it earlier in the blog: Balayage is beautiful. But it’s not necessarily good for hair. We can’t emphasize it enough: nourish and care for your hair with the best hair care. This will prevent your hair from drying out or breaking even more and keep your Balayage on point! In this blog, we’re giving you seven tips to care for your Balayage cut as best you can, so you can always be proud of it!

The Balayage Technique?
Balayage means “sweeping” in French. The color is applied to the surface of the hair in sweeping strokes. Unlike traditional hair-coloring techniques, the color doesn’t saturate the entire hair. This creates natural-looking “strokes” of lighter color along the hair’s length. The strokes are applied intuitively with a brush. The subtle strokes start halfway down the hair, not at the scalp. A treatment takes an average of 1.5 -2.5 uur. But it can certainly take longer. This depends on your preferences and your current color. Still, it’s a good idea to bring your favorite thriller novel to keep you entertained during the treatment.
7 golden tips for caring for Balayage
We promised you some golden tips to help you get the most out of your Balayage . Follow them and you’ll see that you can enjoy a beautiful style for longer.
1. Repair treatment for Balayage
Coloring or bleaching your hair causes it to become dry and fragile. When you bleach your hair, the color pigments are removed from it using bleach . You can imagine that this is anything but good for your hair. But no worries with the right hair care and treatments, you can make sure your hair gets extra hydration now that it needs it more than usual. Choose repair treatments designed for chemically treated hair. We recommend using Olaplex No.3PLUS once a week. The special formula of Olaplex No.3PLUS helps maintain the hair’s softness, shine, and texture between salon treatments. The amika the kure multi-task repair treatment is also a popular repair treatment among our customers. The amika the kure multi-task repair treatment is a multifunctional treatment for weak and damaged hair that provides maximum hydration. It can be used as a rinse-out treatment or as a leave-in for more intensive treatment.
2. Color-protecting shampoo or silver shampoo
We all want to show off a fresh blonde or brunette Balayage. A color-protecting shampoo can be worth its weight in gold. With color shampoo, you not only wash your hair, but can also keep your color looking beautiful for longer or refresh it in a simple way. For example, use the Organicals Color Line. The BioSilk Color Therapy line is also popular with our customers with colored hair. If you have blonde/gray hair (colored or dyed) and notice a yellowish/coppery tint, then silver shampoo (also called no-yellow shampoo, purple shampoo, or anti-yellow shampoo) is meant for you! We recommend Olaplex silver shampoo. This silver shampoo removes unwanted yellow tones. It also contains conditioning antioxidants combined with aloe. Some silver shampoos dry out the hair a little. But these ingredients keep your hair smooth and the color vibrant!
3. Hair masks for Balayage
Use an intensely hydrating and nourishing hair mask once a week. Look for ingredients such as coconut oil, black seed oil, argan oil, or provitamin B5. Each of these ingredients intensely hydrates and nourishes the hair. For example, choose the CHI Argan Oil Hair Mask or the amika the kure intense bond repair mask. Both are intensely nourishing hair masks. Below is a selection of the best hair masks for women with a Balayage style!
4. Daily hydration with hair oil
It’s also important to moisturize your hair daily, especially if it’s bleached or colored. Your hair is much thirstier than usual. Keep it hydrated 24/7 so it doesn’t break or become frizzy. An easy way to do this is to treat your hair to a few drops of hair oil every day to help restore your strands. For example, try Moroccanoil Treatment, enriched with argan oil. Don’t use too much, so your hair doesn’t get greasy.
5. Brush
It’s a fact: your hair is more fragile after a Balayage treatment than it was before. A hairbrush that’s gentle on your hair is essential. We (even my kids) are huge fans of UNbrush. These hairbrushes have a special lightweight, ergonomic design that makes detangling quick and painless. Always start at the ends of your hair and work your way slowly upward.
6. Don’t wash your hair too often
We know this is a challenge! But don’t do it. Washing your hair too often dries it out even more. Your hair won’t thank you for it. Wash your hair no more than twice a week. And when you wash it, use lukewarm water if possible. Hot water dries out your hair. If you wash your hair often, you remove the scalp’s natural protective oils. When the scalp dries out, the hair has no protection at the roots.
7. Heat protection is a must!
Limit your use of heat tools. Heat dries out hair even more, with all the consequences that entails. And we understand that leaving your curling/straightening iron alone is a pipe dream. That’s why we recommend investing in a good heat protectant. Our all-time classic is the Biosilk Silk Therapy. It’s a truly wonderful hair product! The CHI 44 Iron Guard Heat Protectant Spray is also a great heat protectant. It’s a lightweight spray that protects hair from the heat of styling tools.
Balayage, ombre, dip-dye, bronde…what’s the difference?
You’ve probably come across these terms several times while looking for a new look. The differences between these techniques may not always be entirely clear to you. We explain what each technique involves.
Balayage: 40/50% lighter color and the rest base color.
Ombre: Ombre is all about lots of light. 60/70% light ends, with a small amount of your natural hair color at the roots and a little in the ends for a natural fade-out.
Babylights: Babylights are a few lighter strands at the front with a soft transition toward the back. With babylights, the hairstylist leaves a little more regrowth. This creates more movement and light around the face.
Bronde: Actually the opposite of ombre. This is about a dark color with a small percentage of light. Working with multiple shades of brown gives a very beautiful result.
Dip dye: The roots are 100% dark and the ends 100% light. A beautiful fade is essential here.
Everything you need to know about Balayage
After reading this blog post, you’ll know what to do to proudly show off your Balayage. Before getting a Balayage, consider whether your hair can really handle it. If your hair is naturally dry, frizzy, and very fragile, I’d skip it. If your hair is in good condition, you can go ahead with a Balayage. But don’t forget to take optimal care of your hair after the treatment with the right hair care products. We can’t emphasize often enough how important this is with a Balayage.

How much does a Balayage cost?
A Balayage costs between €130 - €230 The exact price depends on what you want and the length of your hair. Of course, it can also vary from salon to salon. But for a Balayage treatment, we recommend choosing only the best, because the saying often applies here: buy cheap, buy twice!

What are the disadvantages of a Balayage?
- Dyeing your locks is quite a chemical treatment, and it won’t do your hair any favors. With the right hair products, you can limit/repair the damage.
- A Balayage may be great for your look, but not so much for your wallet (besides the treatment, you also spend more on hair care aimed at limiting damage and repairing your hair).
- It takes a lot of time! You want to keep your locks as cool (not yellow) and healthy as possible. This often means fiddling around with hair masks, silver shampoos and other hair products that limit/repair damage.
One final tip from John
I stopped by our hair expert John and asked what his golden tip is for a Balayage style. “If you’re getting a Balayage, you really need to invest more time in caring for and maintaining your hair.
