Everything About Beard Care
Beards are all the rage right now! The market for beard care products has grown enormously lately. We’re happy to help you make the right choice, so you can sport a healthy, shiny beard too. Lots of men give up growing a beard because they start experiencing irritation, dry skin, flakes, split hairs and sometimes unhygienic situations. But no worries - with the right beard routine and products, you can prevent this!
Why Is Beard Care Important?
Many people think growing a beard happens naturally. Nothing could be further from the truth! It does start with growing your beard. But care is just as important from the moment you decide to grow one. You don’t want to end up with hairs sticking out in every direction or a beard with a base full of red pimples/stubble during your beard-growing journey. Fortunately, you can prevent this by using beard oil, beard shampoo, beard wax and many other beard products as part of your daily beard routine before heading out the door. Read this blog to find out how to get the most out of your beard with the right care.

How Do You Care for a Beard?
Washing
And now for the big question: how do you care for a beard that’s striving to be the best version of itself? We’re going to tell you. You wash yourself, you wash your hair, and your beard should be washed too. That’s how you keep your beard hygienic. You wouldn’t leave the house without washing yourself, would you? So your beard should be treated as something in its own right. Washing the hair on your head isn’t healthy. You lose natural oils that are important for protecting your scalp and hair. The same goes for your beard (no more than twice a week). Don’t wash it too often, so you don’t lose the shine and softness of your beard hairs. Use a mild beard soap or shampoo for this.
Exfoliating
One season it’s warm, then it’s cold, then it’s rainy. You know the drill! These temperature changes also take their toll on your beard skin. This can show up as dandruff, flakes or irritated skin. To prevent this, it’s best to exfoliate occasionally with a facial scrub or a facial brush. You don’t need to exfoliate often, so you don’t interfere with the nourishing benefits of beard oil and balm.
Combing
Combing your beard hairs stimulates blood circulation. Good circulation promotes hair growth. Combing your beard also helps distribute its (natural) oils. For example, use the handy brush from Waterclouds: Beard Junk Beard Brush.
Nourishing
Nourish and hydrate your beard and the skin underneath with beard oil or balm. In addition to beard oil and balm, use a hydrating face cream. Just like the hair on your head, your beard hairs also need nourishment. Apply beard oil and face cream daily.
Trimming
Trimming your facial hair helps it grow in fuller. Some hairs grow quickly, while others take months to reach a certain length. Trimming your beard ensures all the hairs are the same length. When all your beard hairs are the same length, your beard looks neater too. If you don’t trust yourself with a trimmer, visit a barbershop. If you’d rather do it yourself, we recommend the Wahl Super Trimmer.

Which Products Do You Need for Beard Care?
Now that beard dude/ manscaping/ men's grooming is totally hip, hot & happening, various grooming brands are tapping into the trend. There’s a huge range of beard products, including beard soap, beard shampoo, beard conditioner, aftershave, beard oil and much more. You name it, they’ve got it! But which beard care products are really essential for keeping your beard on point ?
Beard Soap
Wash your beard regularly with beard soap/beard shampoo. Beards get greasy and dirty too, so it’s essential to wash yours about twice a week. Use a beard shampoo, not the shampoo you use on the hair on your head. Shampoos for your hairstyle often contain a lot of chemicals. This can dry out your beard hairs and irritate your skin. Our male customers are big fans of the Beard Junk Beard Cleanser. It’s also enriched with vitamins A, C and E, and its delicious scent makes it a real nose catcher!
Beard Balm and Beard Wax
Beard balm is simply a kind of leave-in conditioner. It hydrates, softens and cares for your beard. Beard balm is also called beard wax. There’s no difference between them; it’s just a matter of what you prefer to call it. Beard balm almost always contains shea butter, which makes it easy to shape your beard (keep in mind that the hold lasts at least a few hours). Beard wax also contains oils and beeswax. These ingredients ensure your beard is nourished and hydrated to the fullest. You’ll have a healthy beard in no time! Make sure to apply the beard balm to your skin too, not just the visible hairs. And last but not least, don’t use too much beard balm. That way, you won’t end up with a greasy-looking beard. The Tigi Bed Head Lion Tamer Beard & Hair balm is very popular with our beard dudes.
Beard Oil
You wash your beard regularly. Even though your beard shampoo/soap contains nourishing ingredients, your beard can feel dry after frequent washing. So treat your beard to beard oil regularly. Beard oil keeps your beard hairs shiny rather than dull. Beard oil can be your best friend, especially when you’re just starting to grow a beard. It also helps prevent itching and irritation. Pay particular attention to hydrating ingredients. Many of our male customers like the beard oil from the Swedish brand Waterclouds.
Use beard oil if you:
- want a shiny beard quickly
- want to prevent irritation, itching and dandruff
- have dry facial hair
- want to care for the skin under your beard
Aftershave
After shaving, the skin’s pores are more open than usual. Aftershave closes your pores again after shaving. This helps prevent skin irritation after shaving your facial hair. In the past, aftershave was mainly sold as a lotion. Now you can find it in every form, color and scent. Many aftershaves are also used as men's fragrances. Two birds with one stone! In any case, choose an aftershave with as little alcohol as possible (or none at all). The Club Pinaud brand has lovely aftershaves, and the bottle looks like a rum bottle. A great gift for the man (or men) in your life ;-).
John Beerens' Beard Routine [5 Beard Tips]
Our own John Beerens has recently become a beard dude too. During a recent vacation in Miami, his wife Josephine hinted that he should grow a beard. “Josephine liked the idea,” the beauty expert says. Since growing a beard and working out regularly, he’s been hearing more often from friends and family that he looks healthy and young for his age (50). “I like having a beard, so I’m keeping it for now!” The beauty expert is happy to share his beard routine with you!
- Every day, I cleanse my face and beard with Beard Junk Beard Wash. A good cleanse helps keep your skin healthy and clean.
- Every day, I apply two drops of Beard Junk Beard Lubricant Beard Oil. The beard oil keeps my beard soft and shiny.
- I regularly trim my beard with the Moser Chromini 1591 cordless contour trimmer, so my beard always looks neat and the hairs are all the same length.
- I also style my beard with beard wax/beard balm. First, I brush it with the Beard Junk Bristle Beard Brush, then apply a little balm. I use Beard Junk Beard Pomade.
- Treat your beard with love. Nourish, care for and cleanse it!
