Curly Girl Method
Women with naturally curly hair know that curly hair needs special care. Curly hair can even vary from day to day! When the weather is very dry, it can become much straighter, or if you decide to sleep with wet hair one night, it may fall perfectly into place for some people, while for others it looks as if their curls have exploded. Fortunately, caring for curls becomes a little easier with the Curly Hair Method! The Curly Hair Method is based on a well-known book: Curly Girl: The Handbook. The Curly Girl Method, also known as the CG Method, is a real hit. The author, Lorraine Massey, owns the DevaChan salons and product line. Drawing on years of experience, she wrote a book for all types of curls, including advice on caring for African American or wavy hair. She also divided her method into several steps: washing, conditioning, and styling.
Step 1: Final Wash
The first step of the Curly Hair Method is the so-called Final Wash. This step is necessary to remove all accumulated product residue and silicones. For this, you need a shampoo that is silicone-free and contains strong sulfates . The sulfates in the Final Wash shampoo remove all harmful residue left by previous (unsuitable) products from the hair and scalp, where it has built up over time. This lets you make a completely fresh start with the right hair products for your curly hair! The Final Wash step is for one-time use, but if you regularly swim in the ocean or a pool, you can repeat it once a month.
We have several shampoos that deeply cleanse the hair and remove all product residue. This gives your hair and scalp a fresh start, so you can begin the Curly Hair Method!
Step 2: Curly Girl Method Shampoo
After the first step of the Curly Hair Method, you start washing your curls with shampoo. However, according to the Curly Girl Method, you need a special CG shampoo for this. And CG shampoo is not ordinary shampoo. “Regular shampoo” generally contains sulfates, which Lorraine Massey considers too harsh for curly hair. Sulfates are known to dry out the scalp by removing its natural oils. And as most women with curls know, curly hair is naturally drier than other hair types! Would you rather use dry shampoo instead of regular shampoo? Or a combination of the two? We’ve picked out a dry shampoo for you that leaves no residue and absorbs excess sebum.
The products we’ve selected for the Curly Girl Method are completely sulfate-free! We have CG shampoos from various brands, such as BioSilk, Waterclouds, and Kérastase.
Step 3: Curly Girl Method Conditioner
After washing your hair with CG shampoo, use a conditioner to moisturize it. The first few times you use conditioner, you’ll probably need more because your hair is damaged or because you’re just starting the Curly Hair Method. Once your hair is better hydrated, you can use less. So, see what amount of CG conditioner works best for your hair. The Curly Hair Method recommends leaving some of the conditioner in your hair. Curly hair needs the extra hydration and won’t get greasy easily. Your hair will absorb what it needs, and you can squeeze out the excess as it dries. This way of caring for your hair won’t suit everyone, so see if it works for you! Of course, you can also use a leave-in conditioner to make sure your hair gets enough nourishment.
All CG conditioners are silicone-free, since silicones are normally removed from the hair using sulfates. Because you’re now using a CG shampoo without sulfates, this is no longer necessary. We have various conditioners from Bumble and bumble, Biosilk, and Waterclouds. We also have shampoos and conditioners from the same brands, so you can use products that work well together. We’ve also taken color-treated hair into account, and have a Waterclouds shampoo and conditioner that neutralize yellow tones in the hair.
Step 4: Curly Girl Method Treatment
When writing the Curly Girl Method, Lorraine Massey naturally took into account the dry texture of curly hair. That’s why we offer Curly Girl Method treatments. These treatments are specially designed for women with curly hair who struggle with dry or extremely dry hair. A hair serum or hair mask can give your dry curls that extra nourishment they need, helping damaged hair recover.
We have various Curly Girl Method treatments from brands such as TIGI, Hairfinity, and Olaplex.
Step 5: Curly Girl Method Styling
The final step of our Curly Hair Method consists of several optional steps. You decide which styling products you want to use. Curly Girl Method styling products include CG Method gel, oil, spray, serum, lotion, curl cream, and curl mousse.
CG Method curl cream prevents hair from becoming frizzy or unruly and helps you keep it under control. Many CG Method curl creams have a protective effect and help curls stay bouncy. Another popular way to style your hair is with curl mousse. Many women with curls prefer mousse because the different hold levels mean there’s always a good option for your hair. Curl mousse also gives you full, beautiful curls. Another option is CG Method gel. Gel is very suitable for curly hair because it not only prevents frizz, but also gives your hair a beautiful shine and better definition! There are so many different options for styling curly hair. Whether you want to use several products together or just your favorite product, the possibilities are endless!
