Dry Hair: What to Do and What Not to Do
Warmer days are just around the corner. The weather is often unpredictable around springtime—one day it’s warm, and the next it’s cold again. One of the main causes of dry hair is precisely this fluctuation in temperature. We know that dry and frizzy hair is one of the biggest hair problems women face. We’d like to help you tackle this issue. Read these dos and don’ts and give your dry locks the best care possible, so you, too, can enjoy healthy, shiny hair.

Things to Avoid with Dry Hair
- Blow-drying: Theheat from the blow dryer can make your hair dry and frizzy; always use a heat protectant or serum when blow-drying.
- Heat styling tools:Heat styling tools can alsomake hair static and dry. Use a heat styling tool for as short a time as possible and protect your hair from the heat with a heat protectant.
- Washing Your Hair: Ifyou wash your hair too often, you’ll strip the scalp of its natural protective oils. Because the scalp dries out, your hair loses its protection at the roots. Try to wash your hair as little as possible! Twice a week is enough. Is your hair really greasy? Then delay washing it by using dry shampoo.
- Seawater and pool water: Avoidseawater and pool water as much as possible. Salt and chlorine can damage the hair’s natural protective layer. If you do go in the water, apply a protective spray to your hair to keep it from drying out, and tie your hair up before swimming.
- No hair products containing alcohol: Alcoholin hair products is a no-go for the hair’s moisture balance. Alcohol dries out the hair and fades the color. Not all types of alcohol are bad for the hair. Behenyl alcohol, Cetearyl alcohol, Stearyl alcohol, Cetyl alcohol, Lauryl alcohol, and Myristyl alcohol do not dry out the hair.
- Combing: Ifyou comb or brush your hair frequently, you’ll damage the hair cuticles. It’s wonderful when there are no tangles in your hair, so the best tip is to comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb or a flexible brush. We especially recommend the brush from The Knot Dr. This way, you can remove tangles while causing as little damage to your hair as possible.
- Chemical Treatments: One ofthe main culprits behind dry hair is subjecting it to chemical treatments. Think, for example, of getting a perm or dyeing your hair. Can’t avoid these treatments? Then make sure to use extra-effective protection, such as a suitable shampoo, conditioner, and hair mask!
- Temperature Changes: Largefluctuations in temperature aren’t good for your hair. Going from a dry, warm room to the outdoors, where it’s only a few degrees, makes your hair frizzy and static-prone. Spending a lot of time in dry environments, such as offices and schools, also dries out your hair. Before you head out the door in the morning, it’s a good idea to apply a serum to your hair. This will keep your hair looking beautifully shiny throughout the day and prevent frizz.
- Tanning Bed: Sunlightand UV light can really dry out your hair. When you go out in the sun or use a tanning bed, it’s best to protect your hair with a heat protectant. This creates a protective layer on the hair, preventing harmful particles from sunlight and UV light from penetrating it.
- Pillow: Atnight while you sleep, you toss and turn a lot, which can cause your hair to become tangled. The friction between your pillow and your hair damages the hair cuticles. When these cuticles open up, your hair becomes dry and frizzy. Sleep on a satin pillow to reduce friction. Satin is incredibly soft and doesn’t make your hair frizzy or dry.
Do's for Dry Hair
- Hair Mask: Nourishdry hair with a luxurious hair mask specially formulated for dry and frizzy hair. Tip: Make your own mask using eggs, yogurt, sunflower oil, and mayonnaise for shiny, soft locks.
- Conditioner: In addition toa nourishing shampoo that’s right for your hair concern, choosing the right conditioner is essential. Select a conditioner that provides optimal care for dry and damaged hair to achieve the best results.
- Drying your hair: Afterwashing your hair, it’s quick and easy to blow-dry it. Unfortunately, the blow dryer makes your hair frizzy, so it’s better to let it air dry. It takes a little longer than blow-drying, but the results are worth it.
- Water: Tomaintain the hair’s moisture balance, it’s important to stay properly hydrated. Drink enough water—about 1.5 to 2 liters a day—to maintain proper hydration.
- Hair Protection: Whenhair comes into contact with heat (from styling tools), it becomes dry and damaged. Always apply a heat protectant to your hair in the form of a spray or serum. The heat protectant forms a protective layer over the hair cuticles, helping to lock in moisture.
- Zinc:Vitamins are absolutely essential for optimal health. Zinc is necessary to improve the condition of your hair. Zinc promotes hair and nail growth. This vitamin is also good for the skin. These days, there are all kinds of hair vitamins that contribute to healthy hair. Our customers are especially fond of our new OASE Hair Vitamins.
- Lukewarm and cold: Makeyour hair shine by rinsing it with lukewarm or cold water after washing. The cool water closes the hair cuticles, helping to lock in moisture. It takes a little getting used to, but it will leave your hair silky soft.
- Trimming: Dryhair is most noticeable at the ends. The ends start to split and feel stiff. Prevent dry hair by having the ends trimmed regularly (on average, every 8 weeks). Don’t worry—trimming just a little bit at a time won’t make your hair short!
- Serum: Thekey to healthy, shiny hair is using a nourishing serum. Apply the serum after washing your hair or before using a heat styling tool.
- Sleeping: Doyou suffer from extremely dry hair? If so, go to sleep with an intensely nourishing treatment in your hair (I often do this with Olaplex No. 3). Coat your hair with coconut oil (read more about coconut oil in this blog) or a little olive oil, braid or tie it up in a bun, and sleep with a towel over your pillow. Overnight, the nourishing, natural oil will be absorbed into your hair, and you can then carefully wash it out in the morning. This gives your hair a boost of intense nourishment and moisture.
