Everything You Need to Know About Dyeing Your Own Hair!

When you think about dyeing your hair, two things often come to mind. First: Yes, a new hair color, a new look! And second: Ouch, the damage your locks will have to endure again. With this blog, we want to give you a hand with dyeing your hair yourself without damaging your style. Dyeing your hair yourself is easy and cheaper. And let’s be honest—in these times of COVID-19, it’s no luxury to have this skill down pat. Read on to find out how to get started.

Is dyeing your hair harmful?

In this article, we’ll focus solely on permanent hair coloring. We certainly know that all the chemical treatments our hair undergoes cause some damage. That’s just reality! Despite knowing this, we ladies are often quick to feel the urge to change our looks. We oftenstart with our hair. Research shows that as many as 60% of women dye their hair regularly! Most women dye their hair themselves at home.

Ammonia in hair dye—what is it?

Almost all permanent hair dyes contain ammonia. Ammonia is a solution of the gasammoniainwater. Why is this ingredient so important? This alkaline substance (a substance with a high pH value) causes the hair cuticles to swell. When the hair cuticles swell, they open up. When the hair cuticles are open, the color penetrates deeper into the hair shaft. At the same time, unfortunately, open cuticles often lead to split ends. That’s why it’s very important to take good care of your hair after a chemical treatment. Consider, for example, the wonderful Color Care line from Waterclouds. These are hair products for colored hair that are enriched with nourishing ingredients such as keratin fibers and marine minerals. The Colour Protect line from the SachaJuan brand is also frequently recommended by our customers. In our blog about SachaJuan, you can read more about the uniqueOcean Silk technology that this brand incorporates into all its hair products.

How do you close the hair cuticles again after dyeing your hair?

Make sure to nourish your colored hair thoroughly with the right hair care products. Be sure to look for hair products specifically designed for colored hair. These contain ingredients that can minimize damage and help repair it! Another tip that helps close the hair cuticles is to rinse your hair with cold water at the end. You can do this when rinsing out the conditioner or hair mask. Apple cider vinegar is also known for its hair-repairing properties. If you mix one cup of apple cider vinegar with two cups of water, you’ll have a magic potion for your hair. You can choose not to rinse it out of your hair (don’t be put off by the smell!), but if the smell is too much for you, you can simply rinse the apple cider vinegar out of your hair after a few minutes. With the hair cuticles closed, your hair will look smoother and shinier again!

Which hair dye should I use?

We have a favorite hair dye, and that’s the Italian brand VIBA! VIBA stands out from other hair dyes in several ways. First of all, VIBA offers excellent value for the money compared to other hair dyes. As we mentioned earlier, good hair care is essential for maintaining healthy hair. The blend of nourishing ingredients in the hair dye hydrates, repairs, and conditions the hair. It contains, among other things, marigold, argan oil, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin F, and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Thanks to these magical ingredients, you won’t lose the flexibility and elasticity of your hair after coloring it.

How to Dye Your Hair Yourself with Viba Professional

We asked the stylists at the hair studio to tell us the best way to apply VIBA at home.

  • Mix VIBA Hydrogen Peroxide with the desired VIBA Permanent Coloring Cream in a 1:1.5 ratio. For coloring, use 10 volume; to lighten by 2 shades, use 20 volume; to lighten by 3 shades, use 30 volume; and to lighten by 4 shades, use 40 volume.
  • Apply to dry hair (so don't wash it beforehand) and start at the roots, working toward the ends. Distribute the hair dye evenly throughout the hair using a brush.
  • Leave it on for 30 minutes, then rinse it out while massaging your scalp with lukewarm water. Next, wash your hair with a shampoo specifically formulated for colored hair.
  • Always use a conditioner or hair mask after coloring your hair to close the hair cuticles.
