Sulfate- and paraben-free hair products: you hear and read more and more about them. But what exactly are sulfates, and why are you advised to avoid these substances in your daily hair care routine? In this blog, you’ll learn everything you need to know about sulfate-free shampoos, and we’ve listed the best sulfate-free shampoos for you!
What are sulfates and what do they do?
Sulfates are cleansing foaming agents that remove styling product residue, sebum, and dirt from the hair. Sulfates consist of two parts: oil-based sulfates that attract dirt in the hair, and water-based sulfates that distribute the shampoo evenly through the hair.
Sulfates come in many different types and strengths: some are more aggressive than others. Harsh sulfates deeply cleanse and degrease the hair, but they also carry the greatest risk of skin irritation. That’s why it’s a good idea to check the label before using a shampoo!
Why is it better to avoid sulfates?
Sulfates provide a deep cleanse and create lather in the hair. So why should you avoid these ingredients?
Many of us enjoy the lathering effect of sulfates. A sulfate-free shampoo hardly lathers at all, which can quickly make you think it isn’t cleansing your hair as well. But nothing could be further from the truth! A deep cleanse isn’t always good for your hair.
Sulfates are generally very harsh and can cleanse the hair too intensely. They strip away the natural oils that protect your hair, causing your scalp to dry out and become itchy. The opposite can also happen: because the scalp is no longer protected from dryness, it may produce more sebum and oils than usual. This can make your hair greasy very quickly, meaning you’ll have to wash it every day. If you have a sensitive scalp, we recommend always choosing a sulfate-free shampoo. We also recommend choosing sulfate-free shampoos if you’ve dyed or bleached your hair. Sulfates cleanse the hair so intensely that they can also cause your hair color to fade. What a shame!
As you’ve read above, sulfates come in many types and strengths, ranging from mild to very harsh. Harsh sulfates are best avoided at all times. Mild sulfates, on the other hand, aren’t so bad and may be easier for you to tolerate. Want to know whether your favorite hair products contain sulfates, and whether they’re harsh or mild? We’ve listed the most common sulfates for you, from mild to harsh. The list below shows various sulfates; those from number 5 onward are considered harsh. Try to avoid these sulfates if possible!
